The Global Green Hydrogen Subsidy Race, Part 2

SYNI finishes Part 2 of our magical tour through the global green hydrogen subsidy race secure in the knowledge that all this political jockeying is indeed a very heavy load to bear for the universe's lightest particle. This week, we’re focused on Asia, India, Africa and the Middle East, regions which account for the vast majority of humanity both in demographic weight and future growth. Surely if green hydrogen is a big “game changer” for the future, then these governments should be drivers enabling this progress for their vast populations and economic development. And the results show they surely are! Episode 23

Green Investment Totals $7,9 Trillion, More 🐳 Than Niche

💚 🌊 Green Investment Totals $7,9 Trillion, More 🐳 Than Niche 🌊 💚 Big shout out to LSGE, who published recent research that provides much-needed perspective regarding the massive scope of global green investment. The current value of the global green economy stands at nearly 9% of global listed equities — that’s $7,9 trillion spread across 50 markets and virtually every industry.

📈 This isn’t a trend. It’s a transformation. The green economy has grown at a 15% compound annual rate over the past decade, second only to tech. Green equities have outperformed global benchmarks in 70% of all five-year periods since 2008, and green bonds set a record with $572 billion in new issuance in 2024 . 🏗️ This market builds the future. Energy Management & Efficiency alone makes up nearly half of the green economy — think smart grids, efficient semiconductors, sustainable buildings. Asia leads in green revenues, while the Americas dominate in market cap. Meanwhile, adaptation finance — flood control, water infrastructure, climate-resilient real estate — is quietly rising as the next trillion-dollar sector Read more...

High Stakes ARENA Round 2 Spins 🇦🇺 H2 Tables Down Under

💚 🌊 High Stakes ARENA Round 2 Spins 🇦🇺 H2 Tables Down Under 🌊 💚 If you listened to our Pod Episode 22 yesterday, here's a quick update: Australia’s Hydrogen Headstart is gearing up for Round 2 — and the stakes are A$2 billion high. For producers of Green H2, this isn’t just a policy tweak. It’s a full-blown industrial tailwind: a ten-year production subsidy paid per kilogram of renewable hydrogen delivered to market.

🟡 Announced as part of last year’s federal budget, this second round marks a major continuation of Australia’s commitment to building a globally competitive hydrogen industry. The first round drew massive interest from developers at home and abroad. Now, ARENA — the Australian Renewable Energy Agency — has confirmed it will open a formal consultation in the early part of the second half of 2025 to shape the final structure and guidelines of Round 2. That means the clock has already started ticking for developers with shovel-ready ambitions.

🔵 As Alexandra Motbey, ARENA’s investment manager, made clear last week on the sidelines of the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, the program isn’t about theory anymore. It’s about execution. The Headstart initiative is designed to bridge the commercial gap for large-scale green hydrogen projects that are cost-competitive in the long term but still need support to survive in today’s fossil-fuel-skewed markets.
