China Announces CO2 Reduction Targets as NDC Underwhelms

πŸ’š 🌊 China Announces CO2 Reduction Targets as NDC Underwhelms 🌊 πŸ’š Chinese climate and sustainability policy has an outsized global impact. So when President Xi addressed the United Nations yesterday to announce its carbon reduction targets, it was time to sit up and take notice. China's stated goal is to reduce CO2 output by 7-10% by 2035, a target that left many observers underwhelmed. The number feels modest when compared with the urgency of the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C pathway, yet it also signals a binding trajectory that matters for the entire global system.

πŸŽ™οΈ As we discussed a couple of weeks ago in Episode 38 of our GreenWave podcast, this type of declared Nationally Determined Contribution, otherwise known as NDC, exists in a middle ground between credible climate action and theatrical flourish of sustainable politics on the grand international stage.

⚑ Xi’s plan also emphasised a doubling of wind and solar capacity and a commitment to lift the share of non-fossil fuels above 30% of total energy consumption. Read more...

Spain Draws Up a Bold New Plan for Electricity Grid Expansion

πŸ’š 🌊 Spain Draws Up a Bold New Plan for Electricity Grid Expansion 🌊 πŸ’š You have to hand it to the Spanish when it comes to their forward thinking and commitment to sustainability, and hence advancements in electrification. Spain is proving itself to be the antithesis of the USA, and surely will reap the benefits from its sustainable infrastructure investment in future years.

⚑At a Madrid event last week, the government unveiled its Transmission Grid Planning strategy to 2030, with a record €13.59 billion allocated to the high-voltage network. That is paired with €1.52 billion for interconnections to Europe and more than €20 billion for distribution upgrades through the decade. This is a scale of ambition that recognizes grid capacity is already under extreme strain. Recent mapping showed 83.4% of distribution nodes saturated, a figure that underscores how far the system has been pushed by the collision of renewables, hydrogen projects, and a rapidly expanding data economy.

πŸ”‹ A draft royal decree is set to raise current investment limits by 62%, unlocking €7.7 billion for distribution and €3.6 billion for transmission beyond the caps in place. Crucially, officials insist that the uplift will not drive household bills higher, as higher demand is expected to enlarge the revenue base. Equally important, the decree introduces tougher accountability. Read more...
