Global Shipping Finally Comes Clean

Ready to set sail on your next big sustainability insight? Our GreenWave Pod Episode 16 explores the deep water shifts happening in the global shipping industry. Discover how a sector that once slipped beneath the climate radar is now steering toward lower emissions and cleaner fuels. Grab your imaginary life jacket, because we’re diving right into the heart of international maritime policy and examining what these changes mean for businesses, consumers, and our shared future.

🌎 After a decade of heated negotiations, the International Maritime Organization has unveiled the world’s first internationally mandated targets for curbing shipping emissions. The goal is a 20% reduction by 2030, tougher fuel mix rules by 2028, and a 380-dollar penalty for exceeding emissions limits. But does this framework do enough to spark real change, or is it just the tip of the iceberg? Join us as we weigh the evidence.

💡 In this episode, our host SYNI offers her cheeky yet deeply informed take on the global mechanics of cleaner shipping. Get the inside scoop on how ports, governments, and shipping giants are collaborating—or sometimes colliding—in the push for zero-emission fuels and cost-effective infrastructure.

You’ll hear the backstory, the controversies, and the pragmatic reasons why Synergy International believes incremental progress can still steer us toward a net-zero horizon.

AfDB Meets to Put a Halt to Carbon Exploitation

Africa’s sustainable natural capital is being grabbed and exploited— so far from being fairly valued it needs to be stopped dead in its tracks.

🌍 Ahead of today's 2025 Annual Meetings, African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina has spoken out about how Africa's vast forests and lands are being hugely undervalued as a CO₂ sink resource , bought at derisory prices—just $3 per tonne of CO₂ compared to Europe's €200. This isn't sustainable or equitable.

📌 African nations must urgently recalibrate their approach. It's up to them to properly value their natural resources. Strengthening regulatory frameworks, building robust carbon market institutions, and collectively setting minimum price benchmarks will secure fair value for Africa’s natural assets. Read more...
