Sustainable Tourism Part 2 - Reshaping Eco Travel

This week, SYNI is zooming out to look at sustainable tourism on a broader scale in Part 2 of a mini-series. We’ll discuss the global trends that are reshaping travel in the name of sustainability, examine if all these green ideas are making a dent in the tourism industry’s environmental impact, and see what’s being done about the not-so-sustainable side of mass tourism. Plus, we’ll take a little tour of some of the world’s most environmentally friendly resorts – from rustic eco-lodges to high-end retreats – and tackle a thorny question: is eco-tourism becoming just another luxury good for the rich, or can it be accessible to everyone? So, grab your reusable coffee mug and settle in, because we’re about to ride the green wave into the world of sustainable travel. Episode 27
Our posts from last week touched on some important topics:

Sustainable Regulators: Just How "Green" Is Your Bunker Buster??

💚🌊Sustainable Regulators: Just How "Green" Is Your Bunker Buster?? 🌊💚 It shouldn't come as a big surprise that the gatekeepers of sustainable investment regulations are not too fussed debating whether the defence industry should be endorsed as a social good. The expanded code of acceptability might be simplified as: just how green is your bunker buster? Let’s follow the money on this one because the ESG rules are showing their contortionist origin.

🪖 In the post-Ukraine world, defence budgets are ballooning, ESG investors are getting itchy, and a new marketing pivot is underway: missiles wrapped in sustainability rhetoric. Some say it’s about protecting democracy. Others call it straight-up greenwashing.

🧾 And here’s the twist: some EU officials are now openly entertaining the idea of including the defence sector in ESG-labelled funds. Not because it’s carbon neutral because it’s politically expedient. Never mind the environmental footprint of arms manufacturing, or the ethical backflips required to brand a tank factory as a “social impact investment.” Read more...

Anglo-Irish Green Hydrogen Pipeline Plan Makes A Good Story

💚 🌊 Anglo-Irish Green Hydrogen Pipeline Plan Makes A Good Story 💚 🌊 It’s not often the UK or Ireland are in the sustainable energy news, much less making headlines together on a bold infrastructure project. That changed with the announcement that the UK and Ireland plan a 100% hydrogen undersea pipeline to boost energy security and decarbonisation.

đź”— Stretching from Belfast to the northwest of England, this proposed pipeline would be the first of its kind in the region, carrying only green hydrogen, notably not a single molecule of natural gas with a sustainability sticker.

🇮🇪🇬🇧 The collaboration signals a pivot away from fossil dependencies and toward a new geopolitical reality: countries that can generate, store, and move clean molecules will control the next energy map. Read more...

Population and Climate Research Keeps Table Talk in the Family

💚 🌊 Population and Climate Research Keeps Table Talk in the Family 🌊 💚 This may or may not be too much information, but our family will often debate climate issues around the lunch or dinner table. One of the themes that often pops up during these sometimes heated discussions (couldn't help myself!): slower population growth should mean moderating climate change in the future.

🌡️ Now we have new economic analysis to help frame this discussion, hopefully in government policy circles as well as at family tables.

📉 A new working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research titled “Population Growth and Climate Change” takes a macroeconomic lens to this exact issue. The study is authored by Adrien Bilal (Harvard), Diego Känzig (Northwestern), and Gregory Casey (Williams College). Their findings are grounded in economic modelling with integrated climate damage estimates. Spoiler alert: demographic policy matters more than most politicians are willing to admit. Read more...
