ππ The GreenWave Podcast By Synergy International ππ Episode 45 is out and you don't want to miss this one!
Measuring Climate Change in Geological TimeSYNI, your hostess with virtual swag, challenges us to become time travellers to ameliorate our view on climate change. She addresses the recent, growing clamour in the climate change debate and why the science leaves very little room for doubt. The clock we should be watching is measured in geological time rather than in financial quarters or electoral cycles. Claims that urgent action is alarmism fail this basic time test. The science shows that each additional increment of warming increases damages and raises the risk of crossing thresholds with long lasting outcomes. The pathways that keep those risks in a manageable range demand deep emission cuts this decade and the next. They require structural investment decisions that align with a world that works at low emissions. So let's go Back to the Future, jump into the DeLorean with Doc and Marty, set the clock to the 22nd century and listen to SYNI tell it like it is. Episode 45Our posts from last week touched on some important topics: Portugal's New Marine Reserve is 2x the Size of the Country
π π Portugal's New Marine Reserve is 2x the Size of the Country π π When something is worth doing, why not do it big? This is not the typical attitude coming from the small-but-beautiful country of Portugal. But when it comes to the ocean, Portugal has been doing it big going back several centuries, so clearly there is no sense stopping now when it comes to marine conservation π΅πΉ Now the country has drawn a new line of protection across the Atlantic. Stretching between Sagres and Madeira, the Madeira-Tore and Gorringe Bank Marine Reserve covers roughly 200,000 square kilometres of seabed, ridges and abyssal plains. That's slightly more than 2x the ~93,000 square kilometres that make up the entire country. ποΈ The new reserve brings under protection some of the oceanβs most ecologically rich features, from the Tore and Sponge-Bob seamounts to the Toblerone Ridge. With this decision, Portugal reaches 30% of its potential marine territory under protection by 2026, four years ahead of the global 2030 target. Read more... Largest in the World Captures Our Attention with SOE Project
π π Largest in the World Captures Our Attention with SOE Project π π The phrase "Largest in the World" has always had a way of grabbing ahold of us, like it or not. Of course, such a designation is not necessarily a good thing, given our vast scope for disasters and catastrophes, like the one underway with climate change. Still weβre full of positive energy today, so weβre delighted to reflect upon the largest in the world solid-oxide electrolysers (SOEs) to a green methanol project. π± Danish manufacturer Topsoe has confirmed an order for 55MW of SOEs to power a green methanol facility in Galicia, Spain. This single project could become a global reference point for the role of high-temperature electrolysis in next-generation hydrogen chemistry. The project developers are targeting commercial-scale methanol production using renewable electricity from Spainβs grid and local solar assets, turning Galiciaβs Atlantic winds and Iberian sun into an export-ready liquid fuel for shipping and industry. π The scale of 55MW may not sound massive next to the hundreds of megawatts seen in PEM and alkaline installations, but the difference lies in efficiency. SOEs operate at temperatures exceeding 700Β°C, allowing them to achieve electrical efficiencies near 90%. That makes them particularly suited for industrial users who can supply process heat or capture waste energy. It also points to the broader industrial logic of using hydrogen not just for direct use but as a feedstock for synthetic fuels. Read more... Sustainability πΊπΈ Style Should Be About Economics, Not Politics
π π Sustainability πΊπΈ Style Should Be About Economics, Not Politics π π At the GreenWave, we have consistently expressed our view that sustainable energy development should be more about economics than politics. It's the supply of affordable, clean electricity, which has increased in near geometric terms in recent years, that makes the case for sustainability being above the political fray. Prices fell as scale rose, investors followed signals from long term demand, and communities learned by building. The market keeps rewarding low marginal cost generation when the rules are clear. π Paul Krugman, Nobel laureate economist, reminded readers that the 2001 Cheney energy report imagined a future ruled by fossil fuels with only a token role for renewables. The report projected non hydro renewables at just 2.8 percent of U.S. electricity by 2020. The actual record overshot that claim by a wide margin as solar and wind accelerated, grid operators adapted, and storage entered real service. Krugmanβs point was plain. Technology changed the economics faster than the old mental models could update, and modest policy helped the early years so markets could scale. π§ The current fightback in the United States reflects this learning. Economists and policy advisors across think tanks, utilities, and state commissions are moving from slogans to spreadsheets. They are backing transmission buildout, interconnection reform, and capacity markets that value flexibility. Read more....
