Yet it seems jellies have now taken their disruptive capabilities to a new level. ⚡ In France this week, a gelatinous army marched right into a nuclear plant’s cooling system, effectively pulling the plug on one of the country’s 1,300 megawatt reactors and hobbling another. To add insult to injury, this isn’t even the first time this summer they’ve pulled the trick. The Normandy coast has apparently become jellyfish central, with La Manche’s warmer waters giving them an open invitation to multiply. 🦑 The imagery is almost cartoonish, so we decided to actually make one. A swarm of translucent blobs jamming filter drums, forcing technicians to hit pause on highly complex machinery. No alarms about nuclear safety, thankfully, just the frustrating reality that an ocean creature without a brain can outwit some of the most advanced technology humanity has built. Read more... To movie lovers , like us, it might conjure up images of a world where people are in revolt against an overly-industrialised dystopia. In reality, industrial separation is a very green thing, referring to processes used to conserve energy during chemical filtration. Most of our readers are likely to be surprised to learn that up to 15 per cent of global energy consumption is devoted to separation processes such as distillation. ⚗️ The traditional approach of heating large volumes of liquid and then separating them into desired outputs has long been recognised as energy intensive. It is a process central to the petrochemical industry, pharmaceuticals, food production, and materials manufacturing. The inefficiency is staggering when considered at scale, as billions of barrels of oil equivalent are spent annually just to drive molecules apart from one another. 🧪 This is why new developments in ceramic membranes deserve serious attention. These membranes function at high temperatures, offer chemical resistance, and allow molecules to be separated with much lower energy inputs. Instead of boiling liquids to force separation, membranes act as selective gates that permit certain molecules to pass while retaining others. The result is the same chemical purity with a fraction of the energy cost. Read more... Momentum is no longer theoretical. It is reshaping investment committees, procurement calendars, and long term power strategy across industries. The center of gravity is shifting toward projects that pair generation with storage and toward upgrades that unlock congested networks. 📈 The International Energy Agency projects total energy investment of $3.3 trillion in 2025, with $2.2 trillion directed to clean power, grids, efficiency, storage, and electrification. That level is roughly double fossil spending. The mix matters for operators and offtakers. Grids and flexibility attract large shares because capacity alone does not deliver reliable power. Storage and transmission are moving from optional to standard in project design and contracting. 💡 First half numbers confirm acceleration, to the tune of $386 billion committed to new renewable projects in the first six months of 2025, a record and a ten percent rise year over year. Utility solar and onshore wind faced financing friction in several markets, and distributed solar, offshore wind, and storage kept capital engaged. Its staggering size translates into a generating capacity of 5 gigawatts, which is enough to power millions of homes. The project has already been connected to the grid, feeding clean electricity into a national system that is still heavily dominated by coal. ⚡ The symbolism of this mega project matters as much as the electricity produced. China continues to carry the reputation of being the world’s largest emitter, but it is also the world’s biggest investor in renewable energy infrastructure.
